Sunday Ride: Sunday Adventure Rides of 2016
Our next Sunday ride will be June 26th, this is a week behind our normally scheduled ride (3rd Sunday) but we have a track day the 19th at VIR, which will have us taking a bit of a longer Sunday Ride down to the “Back of the Dragon” down south of us. We are going to meet at the normal time and take the hike down the interstate to make some time up before getting off a convenient exit to continue down the back roads towards our destination. We will then have plenty of time to experience the road and take in the scenery during a lunch break together. Look forward to seeing you out on the road with us.
Rally Point: Frontline Eurosports 1003 Electric Rd. Salem, VA 24153
***Don’t forget that we are doing dual sport and adventure touring riding events the first Sunday of every month, Street Rides the third Sunday of every month. Let’s get those GS and Tiger machines dirty!!!!!!!****
Nate’s Bike Review: 2016 BMW R1200RS!!!!
The amazing R1200RS, the more touring oriented model from my favorite, naked, R1200R that you heard me rave about in previous newsletters. This model is very similar with the same power plant but difference in ergonomics (seat height, saddle shape and handlebar sweep), and wind protection. We already know about all the fantastic electronics on the R and RS so I will only touch on them briefly with emphasis on the really hot items that demand more attention. With a premium model RS you will receive the following amazing features: Heated Grips, GPS Preparation, Saddlebag preparation and luggage grid, adjustable windscreen height, very informative Board Computer, Switchable ABS and Traction Control, DDC (ESA) which is an amazing feature that shines while hitting the twisties. The DDC acts like the Telelever which prevents massive brake dive in the front end, and pairing this with the consistent Paralever makes for a very predictable ride which leads to a safer atmosphere with a machine underneath you that you can understand and communicate with well, as the DDC gives back some of the comm. lost in the Tele/Duolever system. Another hot item is the cruise control, which again is precise and stays within a mile an hour cruisin’ up or down hills or whatever situation you throw at it…love it!!! My favorite feature of the R1200RS, along with any other BMW outfitted with it, is the Gear-Shift Assist Pro….WOW…what an amazing sensation to be able to eliminate the human error and be able to shift clutchlessly with immediate response. This eliminates the inconsistencies of you finding the right friction zone and making a funky shift, it eliminates fatigue of the left hand by preventing pulls on the clutch lever, in essence prolonging your ride. Also, it truly shows its perfection when down shifting into corners while downhill, a place that most people would feel less comfortable, now feels seamless, and switches gears so fast for you that you are pulling in the clutch and letting the suspension become unloaded right when you are entering or exiting a corner. Me likey likey!!!
Now back to the bigger more apparent differences. The RS is taller in the saddle than the R and has a flat surface area where the R has a swooping saddle that caters to different riders differently. Myself, being a smaller framed pilot, appreciates the more compact cockpit of the R, while pilots taller than myself, 5’8” and above, might like the increased footpeg to seat ratio of the RS and the taller saddle altogether that would prevent less bend in the knee at stops. The upper fairing and the changes it brought about. The upper fairing offers more wind protection and a whole different appearance to the machine, which does it job well, especially with the adjustable factor of the windscreen being 4-position adjustable. You have to remove the mounting hardware to access the other two settings, it’s a quick high low pull on the screen and if you want it higher you physically move the screen up on the mounts. The negative to this is the extra weight that you add to the motorcycle when adding the additional equipment. BMW took this into account and moved the axle location forward 3 mm to insure a more stable feel. In my personal opinion the extra weight made the bike feel “floppy”, like it almost wanted to fall in to turns and extra attention to maintaining a straight line was necessary. Then I had to switch the Touring Switch to Sport mode, remembering that even with the upper fairing this is not an RT, but a hybrid of the R1200R and has more of the athleticism that I liked in the R, that’s why she is so happy in the corners…and then it all comes together for one spectacular ride that anyone can enjoy in any situation.
